I Gave Up Toothpaste Completely — What I Use Now Might Shock You

I used to brush my teeth with toothpaste every day for years. However, I recently decided to switch to more natural and efficient alternatives. I didn’t stop practicing good oral hygiene; instead, I consciously chose to eliminate harsh chemicals and questionable ingredients from my toothpaste. In this post, I’ll explain why I Stopped Brushing My Teeth with Toothpaste and here’s what i use instead.

Why I Ditched Traditional Toothpaste

For years, I brushed with toothpaste every day. But I just stopped brushing my teeth with toothpaste no, I didn’t stop being hygienic. I made the deliberate decision to switch to more effective, natural alternatives free of harsh chemicals and questionable ingredients. In this post, I’ll discuss why I made the switch, what I use in its stead, and how it has enhanced my oral health.

What I Use Instead of Toothpaste

Now that I’m not using toothpaste to brush my teeth, what should I use instead? a blend of safe, natural substitutes that promote dental health without the use of artificial ingredients.

1. Baking Soda & Coconut Oil Paste

This is my preferred do-it-yourself choice. Baking soda is a mildly abrasive natural cleanser that helps whiten teeth and get rid of plaque. Coconut oil helps combat oral bacteria and has antimicrobial properties. How I make it

  • 2 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons of virgin coconut oil
  • Optional: a drop or two of peppermint essential oil for freshness
2. Oil Pulling

An ancient Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing oil in the mouth for 10–20 minutes to “pull” out toxins and bacteria. I use cold-pressed sesame or coconut oil for this.

Benefits:

  • Reduces harmful bacteria
  • Improves gum health
  • Naturally whitens teeth
3. Sea Salt Water Rinse

Sea salt has natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. I use it as a gentle mouth rinse, especially if my gums feel sore or inflamed.

How to do it:

  • Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt in a glass of warm water
  • Swish for 30 seconds to 1 minute
4. Herbal Tooth Powders

Herbs like neem, clove, myrrh, and bentonite clay are used in some excellent pre-made options available on the market. These powders, free from harsh chemicals, effectively clean teeth and freshen breath. Some reputable brands include:

  • Truthpaste
  • Uncle Harry’s Natural Tooth Powder
  • Redmond Earthpaste

What About Fluoride?

Fluoride, often touted as a crucial preventive measure against cavities, is now under scrutiny for its efficacy and safety at high dosages. While excessive fluoride exposure has been linked to dental fluorosis and potential health complications, it’s worth noting that fluoride can indeed strengthen enamel. Consequently, I prioritize enamel strengthening through natural remineralizing products, maintaining good oral hygiene, and consuming a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D.

The Results – Has It Actually Worked?

To be honest, yes. My breath is fresher, my teeth are noticeably whiter, and my mouth feels cleaner since I switched from regular toothpaste to these natural alternatives. My dentist was pleased with my overall oral health during my most recent examination, and I’ve noticed fewer gum problems. Prioritizing the products I use and avoiding ingredients I wouldn’t want in my body is more important than neglecting hygiene.

Conclusion

Remember, you don’t necessarily need traditional toothpaste to maintain healthy teeth if you’re considering a switch. I’ve found that natural toothpaste substitutes like baking soda, coconut oil, and herbal powders can be just as effective, if not more so, than regular toothpaste. Before making any substantial changes to your dental routine, ensure consistency, pay attention to your body’s response, and consult your dentist.
